The biggest desert in the world is the Antarctic Desert. It covers an area of approximately 14 million square kilometres (5.4 million square miles) and is located on the continent of Antarctica. Despite its extremely cold temperatures, the Antarctic Desert is classified as a desert because it receives very little precipitation, with some areas receiving less than 50 mm (2 inches) of precipitation per year. The other three largest deserts in the world are the Arctic Desert, the Sahara Desert in Africa, and the Arabian Desert in the Middle East.
