Want to be a fast knitter? Want to finish your knitting projects at the earliest? Knitting fast comes with experience but that is not all. There are many tricks and tips to help you knit faster. Many times for speed knitting, you can change knitting needles (size, type or material) or the knitting style but there are a few tricks and tips that can assist you with improving your knitting. While you adopt these tips you can improve knitting by investing in high-quality knitting needles. Keep all knitting needle types and sizes in your craft bag. Always use quality yarn in fiber and weight mentioned in the pattern.

  1. Make Knitting a Daily Practice

Like all skills, knitting takes regular practice. The more you knit, the better and faster you get. So, make time for knitting as much as you can. Daily practice will certainly help just 5- 10 rows at least. When you are giving time it is also important to knit without distractions and worries. Focus on your hands, the movement of the knitting needles and the stitch forming. Over time, it will be saved in your muscle memory and form a habit. You can also make a habit to take your knitting on your commute or to walk in the park will certainly get you into the habit even though you knit only a row or two.

Interacting with your knitting community is also a good idea as meeting like-minded people motivate you. You can also participate in knit-along (KALs) as it gives a reason and a deadline to speed up knitting.

  1. Learn to knit without looking.

Knitting without looking is not as challenging as you think. It does take practice but the stitch making over time becomes muscle memory and you actually do not need to look over every movement. Knitting without looking pretty much speeds up your knitting. You can catch up on your knitting while watching your favorite show, at the theatre, during your commute, or even while catching up with friends and family. This will substantially speed up your knitting. Start with a simple pattern (of mainly knit and purl stitches), so you don’t have to constantly refer to it while you knit. Over time the habit will stick.

  1. Get comfortable.

Comfort relaxes your mind as does knitting. It is very important to be seated comfortably as knitting positions can do wonders to your speed and style. Many knitters find it comfortable to sit cross-legged with lots of room to either side for moving elbows while many prefer a comfortable rocking chair. Experiment and see what works best for you. Do keep in mind that the area you choose must be well-lit. Also, take breaks, and stretch your hands.

  1. Knit Looser

You may have come across this, the tighter you knit, the harder it will be to insert your needle into a stitch and even harder to pick the yarn through. Knitting looser stitches will find the opening quite effortlessly as there’s much less resistance when pulling the yarn through getting you to knit faster.

  1. Tension your yarn efficiently

Every knitter has a unique way to tension yarn. To knit faster, it’s recommended you play around with different tensioning methods and find the one that works for you. If the yarn doesn’t glide effortlessly, it will certainly slow you down, so changing the way you tension your yarn is essential.

You have to explore a tension that isn't too loose to knit nor too hard to pull out more yarn. Either weave the yarn in your fingers rather than wrapping them or let it lie flat in your palm, tension in a way that works best for you.
