What is Tithing and Offering?

Why Tithing and offering and does it mean to charity organisations.

What is Tithing and offering?

Tithing and offering are practices often associated with religious and spiritual traditions, particularly within Christianity.

Traditionally, a tithe is one-tenth (10%) of a person's income, which is given to the church or religious organisation. This concept originates from various passages in the Bible, particularly in the Old Testament, where a tithe was a form of tribute or tax paid to support religious institutions or clergy. In many Christian denominations, tithing is seen as a way to support the church's mission and ministry, as well as a spiritual discipline to acknowledge God's providence and express gratitude.

An offering, while similar to a tithe, is typically considered separate and can be more flexible in amount. Offerings are donations given to the church or religious group beyond the expected tithe. They can be monetary, but they can also be in the form of services or goods. Offerings are often collected during religious services and can be used for specific purposes like missions, charity, building maintenance, or other church-related activities. Unlike tithing, which has a more defined expectation (10% of income), offerings are generally voluntary and based on the individual's desire and ability to give.

Both tithing and offering are seen as acts of worship and commitment, demonstrating a believer's faith and trust in God's provision. However, the interpretation and practice of tithing and offering can vary significantly among different denominations and individual believers.

Why Tithe and Offering

The act of tithing and offering is a spiritual practice that extends beyond mere financial contribution. In Malachi 3:10, the Lord invites us to 'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.' This is not just a call for resources, but an invitation into a deeper relationship with God, rooted in trust and obedience.

Tithing and offering are expression of our gratitude to God, acknowledging that all we have is a gift from Him. It's a way to demonstrate our faith and support the work of the Lord in our community. When we tithe, we're not just giving money; we're participating in God's work, helping to spread His love and compassion.

Remember, it's not about the amount; it's about the heart. Every contribution, big or small, is equally precious in the eyes of God. As we give, let us do so cheerfully and with faith, trusting that God will bless and multiply our offerings for the growth of His kingdom and the betterment of our community.

Let us embrace tithing as a joyful expression of our faith and commitment to God’s work. May our offerings reflect our gratitude for His endless blessings and our desire to be part of His wonderful plans for us and those around us. God bless you as you give.

Amen.
